Calyx was designed by Lucienne Day for the Festival of Britain in 1951 after Robin Day requested a modern fabric to be displayed at the entrance to his Home Entertainment section. Calyx immediately captured the public's imagination and went on to have a lasting impact on industrial design. Lucienne had been trying for a number of years to persuade manufacturers, Heal's in particular, to produce more progressive and adventurous designs and had faced a great deal of reluctance. The success of Calyx at the Festival of Britain vindicated what Lucienne had been saying all along, namely that the British public was ready for more modern design. Calyx became successful in the United States where it gained a lot of publicity following a Citation of Merit from the highly respected American Institute of Decorators.
