Matthew Hilton is an acclaimed British furniture designer whose pieces include the Balzac chair, Cross Extension Table and the Lucas sofa.
Hilton studied Furniture and Design at Kingston University after being encouraged to do so while at Portsmouth College of Art. After graduating he worked for a few years as an industrial designer before setting up his own design studio. His first big break came in 1991 when he designed the Balzac armchair for SCP. The Balzac has since become a modern classic and was even chosen by Heal's to be part of its 'Heal's 100' collection in 2017.
In 2000 he became head of furniture design at Habitat, a position which he held until stepping down in 2005.
In 2006 Hilton designed the Cross Extension table and it went on to win Best in Furniture at the Elle Decoration Design Awards.
More recently his Lucas sofa was again shortlisted for the Elle Decoration Design Awards.
